Summary | The article is a discussion of the roots and the specifi cs of the process of evolution of the Russian society's perception of Georgia and Georgians in the fi rst half of the 19th century. In the offi cial documents and memoirs of the Russian army offi cers and administrators Georgia and its people were described as a part of oriental Asian world. The common religion factor did not play any signify cant role in the drawing of a mental map of Georgia, which in the studied documents was not perceived as a territory different from the rest of the Caucasus populated by Muslim societies. The Georgians also were not perceived as reliable partners in the process of "pacifi cation" of the Caucasus, they were treated rather as a precarious ally. | ||
