Topic HISTORY AND HISTORICAL MEMORY
Summary After the collapse of the Soviet Union, one of the discussion threads for historians of Ukraine be-came the origin of the Second World War, in which the emphasis was on Soviet-German relations 1939–1941. On the one hand, to create the new national version of history it was necessary to destroy the old Soviet myths; on the other hand, the history of the war was and remains one of the most important elements of the historical memory of the Ukrainian people. Civilizational and cultural split of Ukrainian society was apparent in that interpretations of events 1939–1941 historians do not agree: the two historiographical traditions co-exist in modern Ukraine.
Keywords Soviet-German relations, World War II, the national historiography, historical memory, cultural memory
