Summary	In the article the author provides arguments in favor of introducing into the academic discussions context of the notion of “dissertation culture” and the related conceptual constructs such as the “dissertation research status”, and “dissertation history”. The set of concepts is supported with the author's interpretations of the meaning of the introduced terminology and the essence of the defined academic culture phenomena. The material of the publication is based on the study of specifics of the evolution of the Russian historical research in the middle of the 19th — early 20th centuries and the experience in organization of doctoral programs in the Russian universities, specifically qualification papers creation in the form of dissertations together with the further process of their review and public defense.
