Summary | The article offers an analysis of historical and economic studies by Russian researches of the late 19th — early 21st centuries on the problem of the Ural’s industry dependence on foreign capital at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. It was established that in the publications by pre-Soviet, Soviet and present day scholars the issue of the degree of western investment influence on regional development was addressed differently. The pre-revolutionary authors in general overestimated the degree of the European capital influence on the Ural’s region economy. The Soviet period historians apparently followed the ideological and political line about the “semi-colonial dependence” in the assessment of foreign influence on regional industrial development. The specifics of the modern period is the refuting by researchers of a thesis about the Ural’s dependence on foreign capital, at the same time using multi-conceptual approach to assessment of the importance and the effect of foreign participation in the economic development of the region. The article demonstrated the controversial nature and ambiguity of assessments of the foreign capital role made by the Russian historians. The author noted the influence of political and ideological factors, which in many respects predetermined both the success and the drawbacks of the studies. The article discussed the studies by the Russian historiographers of such problems and the scale and forms of export of capital, methods and nature of western participation in the Ural’s economy. A conclusion is drawn about the lack of dependence of Russia in general and the Ural region in particular on foreign financial and entrepreneurial community in the end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th centuries. At the same time the author admitted that in some non-ferrous metallurgy industries and specific companies the interests of western owners could influence the decision making processes. | ||
