| Summary | The article deals with the study of the differences of opinion on the education system development problem which often provoked heated debates between the “fathers” and the “children” generations. The older generation of entrepreneurs did not regard the problem of public education in general, or the need to educate their own children as something worthy or necessary. At first this attitude was a function of the relative simplicity of trade and commerce practices which did not require any comprehensive or fundamental education; later it became associated with the spread of radical political views among the university students. Propaganda of education in the media, creation of the state system of incentives for the support of educational institutions, as well as the growing sophistication of business facilitated gradual changes in the attitudes of many entrepreneurs to the problem of public education. Transformation of the Ural entrepreneurs' views on the subject was reflected in a significant increase of the scale of financial assistance to educational institutions, as well as a rapid growth of the number of the traders' and the industrialists' children who received elementary, secondary or university education. The change in the entrepreneurs' attitudes supported by their specific actions had a profound effect on the modernization processes in the Urals. In particular, this led to an increase in the number of educated people, many of whom became modernization actors both in the economy and in various spheres of social life of the Urals. | ||
