Topic ATOMIC PROJECT OF THE USSR
Summary August 29, 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the first nuclear test in the USSR. It became an important milestone in development of the atomic project, one of the most ambitious in the post-war Soviet history. It is not by chance that these events evoke great scientific and public interest. However, a number of its aspects have not yet received proper attention in historiography, in particular, the role and place of the state security organs in the “atomic epopee”. The article addresses the organization of the work of state security agencies for obtaining intelligence materials important for nuclear weapons developers, ensuring the safety of own “atomic secrets”, protecting “special objects”, and monitoring the implementation of government decisions related to the creation of the nuclear weapons complex. A conclusion is drawn that this activity organically fit into the system of the “command” economy in its classical, Stalinist version and made a significant contribution to the successful development of the atomic project.
