Topic ARCHAEOLOGY OF HABITAT AND LIVELIHOOD
Summary Fishing was an important occupation of ancient people in the forest zone in the Mesolithic age. The article deals with the fishery evidence obtained during the research of the Mesolithic peat sites Pogostishe 14 and 15 in the Vozhe lake basin on the north of European Russia, dated by the second half of the Boreal. The sites were located on the ancient lakesides that are peaty nowadays, the finds underlay in the sapropel layer. The fishing inventory includes artifacts made of bone, stone, bark. There are barbed points of different types (fishing harbor tips), whole fishing hooks, plummets (rods with notches on both ends on both ends) among the bone tools assemblage. Majority of the barbed points can be classified to two main types: with closely-spaced teeth and with sparse teeth. Stone items are presented by small plummets for the fish-rod made of slate pebble with grooves and bigger plummets for the fishing nets. Net floats were made of bark. The fishing inventory with some exceptions finds analogies in the Veretye culture in the Lake Lache basin, Mesolithic sites of Volga-Oka basin, Baltic States and Trans-Urals. Ichthyological analysis of the fish bones showed utter domination of luce that was possibly got out by harbors with barbed points. Other species of fish are presented sporadically; fishing rods with hooks and nets could be used for their fishing. The significance of fishing as a survival strategy of the ancient people was confirmed by research of human bone tissue that was conducted earlier and showed that the base of the ancient people nutrition was fresh-water river fish.
