| Summary | This article explores a little-studied topic of polymetallic ore mining and silver extraction in the Urals. In Russian historiography, the prevailing view is that silver was not mined here. Amid large-scale gold mining of the 19th century, silver faded into the background and was virtually forgotten. However, ores containing precious metals were sought in the Urals from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Materials published in the Mining Journal in the 19th century and other sources allow us to assert that more than 20 polymetallic deposits, the ore of which contained silver, were discovered and operated in the Northern, Middle and Southern Urals. The articles by mining engineers F. Bannikov, V. V. Koltovsky, K.A.Kulibin, and the famous Russian chemist I. V. Avdeev, who worked, among other things, on improving the amalgamation process for gold- and silver-containing ores, contain information on the location of such mines, the characteristics of mineral occurrence and silver concentration in the ore, methods of mining and extracting the metal, and technical and technological innovations. The presence of a significant number of silver-bearing deposits in the Urals was also confirmed by the renowned geologist A. P. Karpinsky. Documentation from the Yekaterinburg Gold Alloying Laboratory indicates that over the period under review, more than 73 tons of silver were extracted from gold and copper alone, making the Urals the leading producer of this precious metal in Russia. | ||
