| Summary | Industrial archaeology, as a distinct branch of urban archaeology, has experienced a renaissance of sorts in the Middle Urals over the past five years. This has largely been catalyzed by numerous development projects and revitalization processes, which are increasingly bringing new territories into economic development. For example, in Ekaterinburg, the sites of the former Uktus Ironworks and Nizhne-Isetsk Steel Plants have been registered as identified archaeological heritage sites in recent years. In the Revda Urban District, the dam and the Mariinsky Hammer Mill itself have been included. However, the results of archaeological work on former industrial and mining sites from the 18th and 19th centuries are practically never introduced into scientific circulation. Some groups of sites, such as modern-era mines and shafts, are even perceived as something exotic and atypical. This publication aims to fill these research gaps, drawing upon the research carried out by the Ekaterinburg History Museum team to identify and register old industrial sites, such as the Kvashninsky mine in Ekaterinburg and the Sagrinsky mine in the Nevyansky urban district. Given that the Ural region contains the largest number of exhausted mines, quarries, and abandoned mining landscapes, including extractive sites from the 18th and 19th centuries, the number of studies of these types of sites will only increase in the coming years. | ||
