| Summary | Mortality, together with nuptiality and fertility, is as a vital demographic measure enabling the evaluation of societal and state conditions. Fluctuations in the components of this demographic process can serve as an indicator of the level of modernization in provincial society during the late 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. The article explores mortality trends in the city of Tambov, Tambov Governorate’s center, during that period. The study draws upon a variety of sources, including metrical books, revision lists, municipal citizenry records, statistical datasets and administrative documents. The work addresses challenges related to death registration and recordkeeping practices. It analyzes crude mortality rates, characteristics of the sex- and age-specific mortality structure, seasonality and causes of death in Tambov. Particular attention is paid to infant mortality. Analyzing mortality trends in the provincial capital during the period under review revealed fluctuations in the crude mortality rate, against a general upward trend. Mortality rates in the city remained high and extremely high in the late 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries. In the mid-1850s, mortality in Tambov approached the level of birth rate. Male mortality exceeded female mortality in most age groups. Despite a certain downward trend, the infant mortality rate in the city remained high. To clarify a number of controversial issues relating to mortality in a provincial town during the late 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, it is necessary to draw on additional sources and employ a range of interdisciplinary approaches and methods. | ||
