| Summary | The study aims at identifying the main trends in research into the demographic modernization of Russia in the 20th century at the current stage of development of Russian historical demography. Two current trends are identified: the first one relates to the practice of historical population studies, and the second to the evolution of demographic research. It is shown that, whilst the trend of studying this topic at the national level has continued, the main direction of development of contemporary historiography has been towards expanding historical knowledge of demographic modernization by identifying its regional characteristics in a long-term retrospective or under specific historical conditions. Regional historical studies indicate that the nationwide trend towards demographic modernization has persisted, albeit with variations in timing and socio-contextual factors in the implementation of the demographic transition. It is determined that the use of mathematical methods and information technology is a promising direction for historical research. It is established that the direction of demographic research is focused on an in-depth analysis of demographic data, which allows for obtaining new knowledge of demographic patterns, determining the phases in transformative demographic changes, and comparing global, national and regional, as well as historical and contemporary, demographic trends. It is concluded that an effective development vector of historical demography is associated with territorial demographic analysis of sub-regional locations and micro-geographical areas; its implementation would contribute to a deeper understanding of the national and regional aspects of demographic development at a new level of fundamental interdisciplinary synthesis. | ||
