Topic HISTORICAL FACTORS OF DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT
Summary Discussions about Ukraine’s demographic losses during World War II continue in historical scholarship to this day. Some researchers include the consequences of the territorial changes of 1939–1940 in these losses, while others add victims of the post-war famine of 1946–1947. However, most publications are evaluative in nature and rely on fragmentary sources that have not been critically analyzed. The significant range of estimates (from 5 to 14 million people), the politicized nature of the topic, and the heated debate indicate that this scholarly problem remains unresolved. The main reasons for this historiographical situation are methodological errors —an unjustified expansion of the geographic (by including Crimea and Transcarpathia, annexed after the war) and chronological scope of research, as well as an insufficient source base. Ukrainian historians and demographers often ignore the extensive body of documents from Russian federal archives. Archival research has revealed the particular value of calculations performed by the Demographic Department of the Central Statistical Directorate of the USSR State Planning Committee and the Statistical Office of the Ukrainian SSR in late 1944–1946. The introduction of these documents into scientific circulation allows for a reliable reconstruction of the dynamics and composition of the Ukrainian SSR’s population during the war and makes a significant contribution to the study of its demographic losses in the context of the development of the USSR.
