Topic HISTORICAL FACTORS OF DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT
Summary The article examines key demographic processes in the USSR from the mid-1950s to the 1960s. Statistical data are used to analyze the dynamics of fertility, mortality, infant mortality, nuptiality and divorce rates, and natural population growth as well. Particular attention is paid to the long-term impact of the Great Patriotic War on the age, sex, and marital structure of the population. Changes in reproductive behavior, manifested in a reduction in the norms for having many children and a decline in the birth rate, especially in urban areas, are examined. The development of an epidemiological transition, characterized by a shift in the leading causes of death from exogenous to endogenous, is demonstrated. It is noted that, despite positive natural population growth, the demographic situation was characterized by increasing marital instability, a rise in the number of divorces, and the emergence of a small family model. The analysis is conducted in comparison with the USSR as a whole, the RSFSR and its regions, and also includes some international comparisons.
