Summary	The article is devoted to the study of transformational processes in the development of the family in the Bashkir ASSR in 1959–1989. The main sources were the results of the 1959, 1970, 1979 and 1989 censuses. The research also draws upon materials from sample sociological surveys in the 1960s and 1970s. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time in Russian historiography, it examines the dynamics of the family in the Bashkir ASSR for a fairly long period of time, from 1959 to 1989. The results of the 1959 and 1970 censuses on the distribution of families by individual nationalities is introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The dynamics of the average family size shows that in a number of ethnic groups, before 1970, there was an increase in it, both in rural and urban areas. It decreased among the East Slavic peoples during the period under review. The Bashkirs and Tatars, as well as a number of other nationalities, experienced the growth of large families before 1970. After 1970, small families of 2–4 people became widespread among all the peoples of the region, both in the city and in the countryside. The structural complexity of families also occurred until 1970, after which there was an increase in the proportion of nuclear families. Thus, there are two stages in the dynamics of the family in the period under review: 1959–1970 and 1970–1989.
