Topic HERITAGE OF THE INDUSTRIAL AGE ARTIFACTS AND TECHNOLOGIES
Summary The article describes the hydraulic system of the Nizhny Tagil Demidov Plant, which for over 300 years ensured the operation of the metallurgical enterprise and was an engineering structure comprising a dam, spillway and working sluices, as well as a network of supply and discharge channels identified in situ relatively recently. All these elements are part of an industrial land-scape that is partially ruined and poorly investigated. The landscape evolved through the loss of the hydraulic system’s primary functions and its transformation into a recirculating water supply system for the mid20th century plant. The adaptation of the waterpowered landscape to the plant’s production needs in the era of electric power dominance proceeded through partial reconstructions and ongoing modifications, resulting in a reverse influence of the landscape on the preservation of factory buildings and structures — now cultural heritage sites. The risks of the former factory hydraulic system’s modern impact on the preserved objects can be mitigated only through a comprehensive study of the landscape and forecasting a water balance model for the Old Demidov Plant with an optimal territory watering cycle, including the demonstration of waterpowered mechanisms such as the rod machine designed by S. E. Kozopasov, which was installed at the plant in the 1820s–1870s. The current state of the museumification process of the hydraulic system is examined, and adaptation options are proposed and justified for this cultural heritage site (industrial heritage) while preserving its functionality and interaction with other elements of the complex.
