Topic | ACTORS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE MODERNIZATION |
Summary | The paper focuses on changes in the Urals factory owners community between the 18th and the early 20th century under the effect of modernization processes in Russia. It is demonstrated that this most advanced group of the Urals entrepreneurs (and the most prestigious one in Russia) was formed and evolved under the direct influence of various modernization waves and in many respects reflected the specifics of the process. The factory owners' role grew at the modernization waves' peak periods and reduced as the 'waves' subsided, which to a certain degree predetermined the relatively long period of both the industrial transition and the process of transformation of the Urals mining districts owners into a distinctive social group of modern society. In this situation the growing industrialization demands often exceeded the capabilities of factory owners, as a result of which the individual Urals factory owners were gradually replaced by market economy institutions which took over from them the modernization actors role. | ||
