Статья посвящена отражению идентичности в кино и на телевидении Северной Англии. Автор рассматривает основные вехи в истории регионализации кино и телевидения, роль отдельных жанров (социальная и криминальная драма, ситуационная комедия и др.), способы и механизмы внешней презентации региона. Статья подготовлена с использованием перспективных, но редко применяемых методов визуальной антропологии, на основе широкого круга визуальных и письменных источников, а также авторских этнографических материалов (полевые сезоны 2010–2012 гг.). Большинство телевизионных проектов Севера затрагивает вопросы рабочего класса и классовых отношений, а также ряд, связанных с ними социальных, политических, экономических и культурных проблем, в силу того что на протяжении долгого времени регион обладал статусом «провинции» и считался вотчиной рабочего класса и «периферийной» культуры. Несмотря на то что вопрос о положительном влиянии телевидения на формирование современной идентичности и имиджа Севера остается открытым, телевизионные фильмы и передачи с их вниманием ко всем сторонам повседневной жизни обычного человека служат инструментом актуализации и популяризации региональных иконических символов, культуры Севера в целом.
