Аннотация	В статье рассматриваются подходы современной зарубежной историографии к истории этнических депортаций населения СССР накануне и в годы Второй мировой войны. Предметом анализа являются попытки применения к этим событиям такой международной правовой категории, как «геноцид». Показано, что, не имея возможности оперировать официальным определением данного понятия, зафиксированным в «Конвенции о предупреждении преступления геноцида и наказании за него» 1948 г., западные историки либо используют его с оговорками, либо базируют свои суждения на его различных авторских модификациях, не предусмотренных Конвенцией. Рассмотрены и критические возражения авторов, занимающихся конкретно-историческими исследованиями сталинских депортаций военного времени. Они аргументированно доказывают, что депортации не являются случаем геноцида и что любые дискуссии на эту тему будут не только идеологизированными, но и бесплодными с научной точки зрения. Особое внимание уделено мнениям современных зарубежных историков по вопросу о принципиальной применимости категории «геноцид» в ретроспективных исторических исследованиях. Даже те из них, кто считают ее «неизбежной» для описания и интерпретации исторических событий, подчеркивают необходимость использования этого понятия «с умом и большой осторожностью», указывая, что геноцид в качестве жестко определенной и закрепленной в праве юридической категории с трудом поддается расширенному толкованию. Другие отмечают, что установление того, соответствует ли какой-либо исторический эпизод юридическому определению, должно являться «побочным продуктом» работы историка, а никак не ее конечной целью или основой.
