Topic | RUSSIAN NOBILITY OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY |
Summary | The article presents a study of the role of Joseph de Maistre in restoring the reputation of P. V. Chichagov after the failure of Berezino operation in November 1812. Incisive de Maistre's comments completely exonerating Chichagov and blaming M. I. Kutuzov both for his inaction during the stay of Napoleon's army in Russia and for his intrigues against Chichagov are critically analyzed and compared with the opinions of other contemporaries of the events, particularly, S. R. Vorontsov, for whom the main author of slanderous accusations against Chichagov was Chancellor N. A. Rumyantsev. According to Vorontsov Rumyantsev managed to create a collision between the interests of Chichagov and Kutuzov during the signing of the Bucharest Peace Treaty. However the main reason for the negative attitude of the Russian society to Chichagov in 1812 was not anyone's ill will, but his reputation of a Galloman and Napoleon's fan, for which Chichagov was known even before the 1812 war. | ||
