Summary	A trivial court examination of a village murder triggered a chain of events involving the first per-sons of the Russian state: the Governor-General of Western Siberia, the Chief of Gendarmes, the Internal Affairs Minister, and, finally, the Emperor himself. The associated judge in charge of the case A. F. Brigen was himself exiled to Siberia as a political exile and thus refused to convict the accused on the grounds of lack of evidence. In this way he drew attention to the main defect of the existing jurisprudence which was dependent on the will of authorities and, as a rule, simply approved the accusations provided by the police. The confrontation between Brigen and the top level administration of Western Siberia and the Gendarmes Department which lasted over two years ended with the victory of an intractable associate judge. The author offered a hypothesis explaining how this victory could be achieved and who could have helped Brigen in his fight.
