Topic MOBILITY IN THE ARCTIC
Summary According to Chukchi tradition, a man should warm himself by his own motion rather than by hearth. He recovers his strength by means of momentary relax-sleep. The skill of alteration of tension and relaxation, quick action and quick sleep, in the rhythms and arrhythmia of nomadic life seems to be one of remarkable technologies of Arctic nomads. Chukchi walk and run as everyday practice and a kind of competition provides mobility of reindeer herders. Chukchi “reindeer rhythms” correlates with a complex strategy of movement proceeded from nomadic leaders. Author’s field observations uncover features of Chukchi reindeer-herders mobility.
