Topic PROBLEMS OF ARCTIC DEVELOPMENT
Summary The article provides arguments for the formulation of the problem of the development and functioning of the Northern Latitudinal Road as the system of trade communications across the northern regions of Eastern Europe and Western Siberia, assessment of its influence on the West-Siberian population's culture in the 11th–15th centuries. The article describes the history of the medieval trade routes study and identifies written sources which give reason to suggest the existence of the land and sea communications along the Northern Latitudinal Road, and the functioning in that area of the dedicated trading places. The areas of occurrence of West Siberian artifacts in the north-east of Europe are noted, which confirms the presence in those territories of groups of population from the Lower Ob region. Various categories of imported goods are analyzed, the details of west Siberian 11th–15th century hoards are described; and new phenomena in culture and economics are studied. On the basis of the study a conclusion is made about the partial substitution of values in the world of the Middle Age civilizations under the effect of trading with the North, as well as about overcoming the relative isolation of the cultures and the peoples of the north of Western Siberia and the north-east of Europe.
Keywords Northern latitudinal, Western Siberia, north-east of Europe, trade, treasure, innovation in the economy
