Topic PROBLEMS OF ARCTIC DEVELOPMENT
Summary Under the modern conditions of intensive industrial development of the Yamal a significant part of the Nenets is employed in the traditional sectors of economy — reindeer herding and fishing — which in many respects are still based on the so called “ancient principles” allowing the Nenets not only to maintain their traditions but also to pass them on to the future generations. The reindeer herders and fishermen maintain their rituals, traditional means of transport, tools, crafts, houses, cloths, etc. At the same time they are quite open-minded to modern technical innovationsand adapted successfully to market economy conditions. Today's life of the tundra nomads and the semi-nomadic fishermen is quite unimaginable without snowmobiles, motor boats, domestic appliances, mobile and satellite phones. The established trade contacts with the migrant population, availability of imported goods, as well as active involvement in the tourist industry became an important component of their modern life. The study demonstrated that the Nenets are capable of successfully combining the traditional way of life and the benefits of industrial society.
Keywords Nenets, reindeer herding, fishing, innovations, the traditional way, the market
