Topic PEOPLES OF THE URAL
Summary The subject of the study was the genesis, structure and dynamics of the Nagaibak identity evolution — in the past a group of the Cossacks formed in the 18th century from the baptized Tatars of the Ufa province, and today the indigenous ethnic group localized mostly in two districts of the Chelyabinsk region. In the process of the Nagaibak evolution there developed three main components of their identity, which were unevenly represented in different periods — the confessional, the estate, and the ethnic components. Unlike previous publications, where the modern Nagaibak identity was studied on the basis of the primordial approach, we, for the first time, approached this problem from the positions of social constructivism methodology. This allowed to resolve a conflict which became apparent in the early 1990s between the primordial understanding of the Nagaibak identity (ethno-confessional group, sub-ethnic group, ethnic-estate group as part of the Volga-Ural Tatars) and their self-identification translating two levels — the Kryashens and the Nagaibak, and ignoring the Tatar component. A result of our study was the determination of the reasons for origin, historical development mechanism, and the modern identification basis of the Nagaibaks explaining the phenomenon of modern Nagaibak identity. One of the most important conclusions of the study was the indication of the role of state and political processes in the evolution of new identities. The history of the formation and the development of the Nagaibak identity is a kind of “case study” illustration for the study of modern ethnic processes vectors occurring simultaneously under the effect of natural inter-ethnic contacts, and of direct intervention by the state.
