Topic | GERMAN NAMES IN THE RUSSIAN SCIENCE: ARCHEOLOGY AND ETHNOGRAHY |
Summary | The emergence of science called anthropology, ethnology, and ethnography is usually referred to the successes of European evolutionism in the mid 19th century. However, about century earlier the science on peoples has appeared in Russia in a course of academic expeditions and works of academician-Germans who introduced the methods of European science to the Russian ground. In duration of 18th century the ethnography in Russia has been maturating as a self-awareness of the multinational empire. The pivotal role has been played by Peter Pallas, Johann Georgi and other participants of the academic expedition 1768–1774 initiated by Gerhard Miller and supported by Empress Catherine II. The travelers began their explorations as naturalists but returned as ethnographers elaborating methods of cultural and ethnic comparison and systematization in the direct fi eld observations. An impetus to ethnography has been also given by visual projects based on Kunstkamera collections such as “parade of peoples” in the years of Empress Anna Ioan novna and publication of pictures with costumes of Russia’s peoples in the years of Empress Cathe rine the Great. | ||
