Summary | The Assembly of the Russian Nobility was one of the largest voluntary organization in the pre-reform Russia. The Assembly, one of the main functions of which was organization of social events for the Moscow nobility, played a decisive role in the transformation of social life character from the mostly private, dominated by kinship and personal acquaintance networks into a public domain, based on belonging to the nobility class and club membership. Equal representation of women, who constituted a majority in the Assembly, was a significant gender breakthrough. Public discussion of issues of the Assembly’s functioning, equal status of its members, their right to put any issue to vote — all this was instrumental in acquiring by the nobility of democratic procedure and decision making skills. As a result of provincial nobility's participation as members and guests of the Assembly, similar functions — parties, concerts, masquerades, discussions, the principles of club life and club space organization were gradually taking root in the provinces and became institutionalized. | ||
