Topic CENTENARY OF WORLD WAR I
Summary The article deals with the new trends in the study of most important issues of the history of World War I which served as a preface for all further contemporary history developments. In modern Russian and international historiography the tragic events of 1914–1918 are traditionally interpreted as the first global armed confrontation of dozens of nations in practically all continents and in three physical environments — on land, at sea and in the air. The Great (as it was referred to by contemporaries) War was industrial, coalitional and total in nature. The use of interdisciplinary approaches involving comparative studies, social anthropology and imagology resulted in a review of a rather misleading and outdated interpretation of World War I as “imperialist slaughterhouse” which was started and fought exclusively in the interests of “capitalists and landlords”. For the peoples of Russia it was the Second Patriotic, and for the so-called ethnic peripheries of the former Russian Empire it was also a war of liberation opening a lengthy period of social and political instability, which by analogy with the events of the 17th century was labeled a “new Thirty Year War”.
