Summary The paper deals with the description of the Arsk fortress ceramics (Arsk district, the Republic of Tatarstan). As a result of detailed study of the Arsk ceramics and extensive use of analogies the authors were able to establish the chronology of the existence of the identified types of crockery over the period from the 12th to the 19th century and describe the specifics of the development of pottery preferences of Arsk inhabitants. It was established that the few samples of modeled (handmade) and fixed up on a potter’s wheel ceramics of the 12th–14th centuries, as well as part of the 15th–17th century pottery were made at the fortified settlement or in its vicinity. Most of the pottery (five groups) was imported and came from the city centers of the Middle Volga and Moscow regions. The assortment and character of the pottery indicated that the settlement was inhabited by people of a high social status.
Keywords Arsk fortress, hand-made and potter’s ceramics, local and imported pottery vessels
