Topic MAN OF ARCTIC
Summary The publication presents new data on the history of reindeer herding origin in the north of Western Siberia. The study focused on wooden, antler and bone items found during the ongoing archeological excavations on the ancient sacred place Ust-Poluy (1st century BC — 1st century AD). The paper contains a detailed description of the following finds categories: fragments of ancient sleds, two-part swivels, shaffrons, clamps-fasteners, and harness buttons. The authors provide arguments in favor of at least part of the items belonging to a reindeer harness set and, hence, the fact of the existence of transportation deer herding already at the turn of the eras. The existence and use of the ancient draught dog breeding is not denied either. General understanding of the role of archeological artifacts is supported by indirect data on the subject together with the brief analysis of the historical situation in the region during the early Iron Age period.
Keywords north of Western Siberia, Early Iron Age, herding, ancient harness, the ancient sanctuary of Ust-Poluy
