Topic CINEMANTHROPOLOGICAL MOSAIC
Summary This paper is devoted to the research of identity issues in cinema and TV of the Northern England by the exploration of the main stages of cinema and TV regionalization history, the role of special genres (social and criminal drama, sitcom, etc.), the methods and mechanisms of regional presentation. The paper is developed with innovative visual anthropology methods, based on the wide written and visual sources, including original ethnographic materials (field work 2010–2012). Because for a long time the region had "province" status and the working class and “periphery” culture reputation, the most television Northern projects consider class and class relations question, as well as a number of coupled social, political, economic and cultural issues. Apparently the TV impact on the formation of contemporary Northern identity and image stay questionably positive, but cinema and television with their deep attention to the aspects of ordinary people daily life serve as a tool of actualization and popularization of regional iconic characters, Northern culture on the whole.
Keywords identity discourse, regional/local identity, contemporary North of England, centreperiphery, cinema, TV, postindustriality
