Summary | The article presents an analysis of the main works by the French Russia scholar Jules Legras on Russia and the Russians (mostly about two estates — the bourgeoisie and the peasants which, according to him represented the future of the country) and the public response to these works, as well as his book “Russian Soul” (1934), which was a kind of summing up of his previous observations. In his book the author listed main qualities and specific features of the Russian character and named five fundamental reasons which in his opinion contributed to their development (geographic position, influence of foreign culture, low level of culture, youth of the people and youth of nation). He set aside certain qualities the direct origins of which were hard to identify. J. Legras based his research on ethnographic, psychological, linguistic, cultural and historical ap-proaches. His view of the Russian life was objective, his reasoning and conclusions quite balanced, therefore his model of perception of Russia which influenced the ideas of Russia in the early 20th century France, and the Russian images which shaped the historical memory of the French people are still interesting for the researchers. | ||
