Topic PROJECTS
Summary During its fourth field season of EthnoExpedition–2014 the four teams of the expedition super-vised by the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. V. Golovnev have been engaged in research projects in the Ural. The Northern team worked with the Mansi in the Khanty-Mansijsk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra, the Central team — with the Mari, the Tatar and the Russians in the Sverdlovsk Oblast, the Southern team consisting of two groups focused on research among the Nagaibaks, the Russians, and the Bashkir in the Chelyabinsk Oblast and Bashkortostan. The materials from the questionnaires, interviews and informal conversations, as well as visual records are still waiting to be summed up, analyzed and published in the academic and popular-science publications, demonstrated in photo exhibitions and film festivals. This article gives only the first and very superficial review of the obtained data. Looking at the Ural as the ethnic crossroads and the origins of large-scale migrations, as the meeting place of the peoples and cultures of the East and the West, the North and the South we focus our attention on issues of ethnic self-identification and everyday ethno-diplomacy of this poly-ethnic region.
