Summary The article examines the key points in the history of the Finno-Ugric peoples’ culture studies in Russia, which have been associated with the work of the founder of the Department of Finno-Ugric Ethnography at the University of Helsinki, Professor U. T. Sirelius (1872–1929). The author emphasizes the role of the researcher in the formation of the ethnically recognizable identity of the Finno-Ugric peoples in the global ethnographic research. The author also noted his contribution to the formation of the first generation of professional ethnographers of the Finno-Ugric origin in Russia. The article gives an overview of research projects and provides examples of succession in the field of the Finno-Ugric studies.
