ROMANOV’S EMPIRE AND THE PROBLEM OF CONTROL OVER A CULTURALLY HETEROGENEOUS TERRITORY

Summary The article attempts to investigate how the Romanov dynasty managed maintaining a phenomenal stability during several centuries in such a complex conglomerate of cultures and ethnic groups as the Russian Empire; the author reviews the ideas of contemporary specialists-historians on the mechanisms used by the Romanovs to build and expand their empire; studies the issues relating to the definition of the Russian Empire’s structure and the basic mechanisms of imperial control over the periphery. Within the context of this problem the specifi cs of government organization in the Ural-Kaspian and the Ural-Volga macro-regions is defined. The author noted a growing interest in today’s historical research in the experience of the Romanov Empire in managing control over the culturally heterogeneous territory with a particular focus on the “internal periphery”, its distinguishing features and the specifics of managing it as part of the process of expanding of the “core” of the Empire and creating conditions contributing to a long-tern stability of multicultural societies.
