Summary | Based on the study of the documents of the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Camer — Fourier journals, and the memoirs the author reconstructed the list of foreigners who visited Russia in 1801 and attended the ceremony of Alexander I accession to the throne. There was a significantly greater number of guests at this coronation ceremony than at the previous ones. Alexander I accession to the throne took place in the atmosphere of general exultation and a sense of freedom after the reign of his predecessor Pavel I, and attracted a lot of foreigners to Russia. Foreign diplomats representing the Austrian Emperor Franz II, Napoleon Bonaparte, King George III of the United Kingdom arrived to St. Petersburg to offer congratulations to Alexander I. The coronation ceremony was attended by the diplomatic representatives of the Batavian Republic, Naples, Sweden, Prussia, Sardinia, the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Hannover, and the Pope. In addition to the representatives of the foreign diplomatic corps the relatives of the royal family also visited Russia. Alongside with the representatives of various states the coronation festivities were also visited by foreigners who arrived privately: traders, representatives of the nobility and the clergy. The most honored of the foreigners who arrived to Moscow were given a chance to attend the festivities celebrating the coronation which lasted for six weeks and included balls, masquerades, theatre performances, concerts of the famous artists. | ||
