Topic ROMANOV’S RUSSIA
Summary The paper, for the fi rst time in the Russian historiography, presents a critical analysis of the written sources containing information about the visit to Nizhny Novgorod of the Emperor Peter I in May 1722. The analysis covered all the traditional for the Russian historical writing stories related to this visit: royal visit to the tomb of Kuzma Minin, relationship with the local governor Yu. A. Rzhevsky, the closing by the tsar of the famous Nativity Church in Nizhny Novgorod. The critical analysis and the later origin of some of the sources led to the conclusion about certain inaccuracy of some of the data related to the Tsar’s visit to Nizhny Novgorod, nonetheless, these stories are firmly rooted in the local historical tradition, in many ways owing to the efforts of some local historians and regional ethnographers of the 18th–19th centuries.
