Summary | The subject of the study was the historiosophical position of I. A. Bunin in the 1910s, which was in many respects a polemical response to the doctrine of national life formulated by L. N. Tolstoy in “War and Peace”. Comparison is based on the study of story lines representing the situations of an officer's departure to war and his leaving behind his pregnant wife, as well as the homecoming of the heir of the estate in the company of his friend-officer, who later proposed to one of the ladies of the host family. Both in the structural pattern and on the level of specific detail the elements of the “Sukhodol’s” poetic story-line coincided with the corresponding episodes in the Tolstoy’s novel. The study took into account both the fragmentary differences of the compared story lines, the chronological shifts used by Bunin, who relied both on the Tolstoy’s novel as his source, and the story of his own father and uncle, and the general context of the polemics between Bunin and Tolstoy about the nature and historical rhythms of the evolution of Russia in the beginning — second half of the 19th century. | ||
