Summary | The author studied various goals underlying a research journey made by D. G. Messerschmidt across Siberia within the context of major Peter I research of the Russian state projects. The author pointed out the differences in understanding the goals of this trip on the part of the Medical Office, which was within its competence an administrator of the expedition, and the researcher himself who saw this journey as a comprehensive research project, which was in line with the universal knowledge traditions of the end of the 17th — first half of the 18th centuries. While the Medical Office gave Messerschmidt the task to study flora, fauna, minerals of the explored territories for the purposes of their future practical application in “apothecaries’ business’’, the researcher himself saw the goal of his journey in geographic (for the amendment of maps), meteorological, natural science studies, the description of the people of Siberia and their languages, in the collection of all kinds of “antiquities’’ for the Royal Museum, as well as manuscripts for the Royal Library. A comprehensive study of Messerschmidt’s travel notes together with the official documents (orders, decrees, reports), as well as his correspondence provided better understanding of specifics of research expeditions’ administration before the establishing of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. | ||
