| Summary | The article tells about a unique project — the publication of the translations of the French studies on the history of the South Urals of the 18th–20th century. Several generations of French historians dedicated their studies to the South Ural. The studies involved the origins of the Uralic peoples, the history of colonization of this region by Russia, people’s revolts against the central authorities, the problems of the metal works construction, etc. The article demonstrated the importance and the value of the French researchers’ studies for the academic historical studies of the Urals. The author offered a periodization of the French historiography of the South Urals identifying three main stages in this process. At the first stage the French researchers studied the region relying on the materials published in Russia, only later they became familiar with its people during the military campaigns of the early 19th century. During that period they mostly focused on describing the outward appearance of the people from the South Ural. The second stage of the French historical studies of this territory began in the middle of the 19th century. A distinguishing feature of this period was the organization of ethnographic field expeditions and the development of ethnogenetic concepts. After 1917 the French historians had very limited capabilities for the study of the South Ural, and their main efforts concentrated on the search for materials available in public libraries. It was during that period that a number of significant French papers on the history of the South Ural were written. During the post-Soviet time the French researchers resumed their field expeditions practice, they also worked extensively with the local archives. | ||
