Summary | The article is a study of ceramics with relief sculptures decorations from the group of sites “Sacred Place Koksharov Hill — Yurjino Settlement” in the forest Trans-Ural. This is the most representative of all so far known complexes of this type of ceramics, consisting of 107 fragments from no more than 89 vessels. The period of existence of the tradition of vessels with sculptured decorations at the site was estimated as the Neolithic within the boundaries of the Koshkino, Koksharov-Yurjino and the Poludenskaya (isolated items) cultural traditions. In addition to the three vessels with bird shaped stick-on handles, the bas-relief images on vessels were made by means of sticking to the already shaped but not yet ornamented neck of a vessel of clay cones, or by means of finger pulling raw clay in these places. In this way a muzzle or a nose of a zoomorphic or an ornitomorphic creature was made. Additional pinpricks indicated eyes and/or mouth, however quite often these details were simply inscribed into the main ornamental pattern of a vessel. The collar cut under a sculptured decoration could be shaped as a ledge or emphasized with deep cuts; the sculptured ornament could also be placed under the wavy cut depression. The semantics of sculptured images has been defined primarily within the context of totemic beliefs of ancient communities. The author demonstrated the distribution of fragments with these type of images across the sacral space of the archeological site and their relation with the religious and ritual practices. | ||
