Topic
Summary This contribution deals with the notions of territoriality, mobility and migration connecting them to each other. Contrary to common viewpoints, the author tries to show that mobility does not exclude territoriality, as it is supposed in a more or less “sedentary” approach. Such a sedentary viewpoint is not only tightening conflicts between ethnic groups, it seems also to be common to several theoreticians of the topic. In the contrary, mobility should not be considered as a phenomenon making territoriality impossible. Moreover, especially in nomadic communities, mobility contributes in maintaining territoriality as it allows the connection of several places. The paper refers to examples of African pastoral societies.
Keywords territoriality, mobility, migration, nomadism, nomads, Sahel
