Summary | The article deals with the history of the intellectual confrontation among the advocates of edinoverie in the 1860s. Particular attention is being paid to the disputes among the group members on the subject of establishing a separate edinoverie episcopate with a special focus on the ideas about edinoverie voiced by two of its most prominent supporters — a priest I. T. Verkhovsky and a merchant G. F. Kazantsev. The discussions of the 1860s marked the beginning of a lengthy and gradual process of transformation of edinoverie from the so-called “mass” religion into the “elite” one, the followers of which believed in the possibility of co-existence of the “old belief” practices within the structure of the Russian Orthodox Church. This process was accompanied by strengthening of the role of individuals in the history of edinoverie, which found its manifestation in the emergence of a group of prominent missionaries, philosophers, public fi gures in the midst of the followers of the edinoverie ideas. | ||
