Summary | The article presents a study of changes in the forms of transmission of the rights to the Ural's mining factories in the process of succession by eight generations of the famous Demidovs family during the imperial period. The author established a connection between the forms of succession and the evolution of the district's mining factories organization. All known succession cases involving the representatives of the two branches of N. D. Demidov's family from the beginning of the 18th to the early 20th centuries have been analyzed. It is demonstrated that the initial desire to preserve a “single ownership” structure was reflected in the general practice of dividing factories between the heirs, which was practicable at the stage of mining and metallurgical districts formation period in the 18th century. With the completion of this process in the late 18th — early 19th centuries this practice was replaced with the splitting of title resulting in “multiple ownership” pattern with its associated negative consequences. This in turn gave rise to the search of ways to neutralize these adverse effects resulting in establishing of private and limited partnerships in accordance with the statutory “Provisions on Joint Management” and were later reorganized into joint stock companies. The author believes that the Demidovs' case reflected the general situation, characteristic for many of the Urals factory owners families acting as the development agents for the leading industry of a major industrial province of Russia. | ||
