Topic ARCHAEOLOGICAL FACTS AND INTERPRETATIONS
Summary This article shortly presents some results of the architectural reconstruction of the houses investigated at the fortified settlement Kamennyi Ambar , situated in the valley of the Kargaily-Ayat river (Kartaly district, Chelyabinsk county). Some aspects of the settlement planning and structure are discussed, as well as the three phases of the settlement “life history”. The enclosing line with inside buildings are connected with the first phases. The earliest one is represented by the remains of six houses, three from which are fully investigated. House 5a existed without big changes in the second phase; however the house 5b was expanded to the area of construction 5c ceased its existence. In the late phase, the settlement was occupied by people left the pottery of the Srubnaya-Alakul type. In the excavation 6, this time is represented by house 6. The houses of the first two phases were of similar design, although there are some differences in compositional solutions. Architectural reconstruction is fulfilled on the material of the building 5, consisting of two houses. It is resulted from analysis of stratigraphy, postholes positions, wall ruins, roof debris, and wooden details of interior. The design and construction of houses is analyzed. The change of architectural tradition and its connection with environment and lifestyle of settlement’s occupants is traced.
