Summary | The article sums up the findings of the study of antler and bone tools for hides shaving discovered in the process of archaeological excavation of Ust Polui in 2006–2015. The site was located in the north of West Siberia, within the city bounds of Salekhard (the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug) and belonged to the early Iron Age period. The site was interpreted as the ancient sacred place the period of the most active functioning of which coincided with the turn of the historical eras. The authors studied a group of finds consisting of over one hundred antler tools, mostly scraper-spatulas from the point of view of their use and manufacturing technique. The study also embraced the remaining, less numerous groups of artifacts: the T-shaped scrapers, handleless spatulas, antler hook-shaped and arched tools for hides softening, as well as scrapers made from reindeer long bones. The analogues of these tools were provided including the study of their evolution. It was established that the antler scraper-spatulas were the main type of tools and the most representative category of tools used for hides shaving. Owing to their universality they were suitable for all types of technological operations — from the removal of membrane to hides softening. The set was complemented by other, more specialized tools the analogues of which could be found in all northern cultures of Siberia. The authors proposed a hypothesis about the reason for disappearance of antler scraper-spatulas during the Middle Ages period: they were probably displaced with another type of tool — a two-handled scraper with an iron blade. | ||
