Topic | COMMUNIST EXPERIMENT IN THE USSR: THE SOCIAL DIMENSION |
Summary | The paper points out that the whole complex of socio-economic and socio-political circumstances influenced the collapse of the Soviet Union. Among them, one of the most important was cultural factor. Under the dominance of communist regime, sharp contradictions arose between pluralistic essence of cultural process and authoritarianism of the political system, which seeks to subordinate and use it in its own interests. The ideological pressure of Soviet power, restraining creative initiative, independence of thinking and political activity of the Soviet intelligentsia, finally caused serious opposition from the most radical part of intelligentsia. The lack of correspondence between ideological slogans and real economic and political situation in the country caused critical attitudes among representatives of Soviet culture who, through political acts and creative works, influenced consciousness of the masses, gave rise to dissatisfaction with the results and disbelief in ability of Soviet authorities to make positive reforms. It is concluded that the authorities’ attempt to “twist the nuts” in the cultural sphere of public life led to opposite effect, making Russian intelligentsia open or hidden opponents of the political regime, making them a force, which can organize and lead the protest movement. | ||
