Topic SELF DESCRIPTION LANGUAGES
Summary The article describes the personal and the intellectual reaction of A. P. Chekhov to inclusion of Taganrog — his native city — into the Province of the Don Cossack Host. The author was quite familiar with the life and culture of the Don Cossacks, which found its reflection in his letters and stories — “Steppe”, “The Cossack” and “The Pecheneg”. These stories appeared to be a form of representation by the author of his motherland, his understanding and acceptance of it, the self-description text. A. P. Chekhov created an artistic language for the expression of the Cossack tradition as part of the local Azov and Don culture. A lot of things in the ethno-cultural environment of Chekhov’s stories are difficult to understand by a modern reader owing to their regional specifics. However they help revealing in the Chekhov’s texts the meanings which were implicitly present in their structure but became apparent only in the south Russian context. The story “Steppe” reproduced the typically Cossack perception of the steppe as the environment for the testing and the evolution of the main character. An image of a wounded Cossack added to “The Cossack” story an implicit, “convoluted” motif which later unfolded beyond the limits of a story owing to a Cossack song. In “The Pecheneg” it were the Cossacks’ morals which appeared savage to an outsider that formed the foreground of the story. Thus the “Cossack” material gave A. P. Chekhov a creative stimulus; it is another evidence of the importance of historical and cultural phenomena, the reflection of which in literature was a result of the immediate impressions experienced by the author.
Keywords A. P. Chekhov, Don Cossacks, The Steppe (novella), short stories “The Cossack”, “The Pecheneg”
