Summary The article is an attempt to reconstruct the formation of the spiritual world of Siberian Jewish entrepreneur Yakov Friser at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries through analysis of the documents from his personal archive. Ego-documents are one of the keys to deciphering the symbolic language of mentality. Yakov Friser’s personal archive, which was preserved by his descendants in Israel, includes various notes, diaries and letters, it should be depicted as unique and could be used by researchers for understanding his personality formation. The authors reconstruct the image of Yakov Friser — a Jewish autodidact from the small Siberian town of Barguzin who became a self-made man due to his talents and abilities, not only a successful gold entrepreneur but also a talented publicist, financier, romanticist and moralist. The role of reading circle and encounters with outstanding persons in the process of development of the Siberian merchant spiritual world is shown. An assumption is made that there was a few parallel systems of interrelations between different strata of the Russian society. The outskirt Siberian model was different compared to the traditional vertical hierarchy based on giving status and origin, it was a horizontal one, based on the interaction and interpenetration of different social and religious groups where institutionalized social hierarchy had little or no importance.
