Topic RUSSIAN PROVINCE: EVERYDAY LIFE HISTORY
Summary Over the past decade in the town of Borovsk, Kaluga Oblast, there has been an intensification of the process of heroization of the local “public history” content — historical narrative in the institutional dimension. This process is carried out by local museums, tourist, cultural-historical organizations and educational institutions with participation of local authorities and religious institutions as well. Heroization of historical narrative is aimed, in particular, at increasing the tourist attractiveness of the town and patriotic education of its inhabitants. The main characters of the local heroic narrative are prominent historical figures — the “heroes” of the Borovsk “public history”, whose historical role is important both in the local and national context. The study has demonstrated that the most important tool for the future development of the town is history, which becomes the predominant discourse of the present of the town in the institutional dimension. History is the main symbolic and economic resource of the town that has few industrial enterprises within its territory.
