| Summary | The paper explores the process of formation of Magadan oblast, a new administrative-territorial entity established in 1953 in the territory of the Dalstroy (former MVD Directorate) activities. The author pays special attention to the prehistory of the issue, the role of the central authorities and the importance of client-patron contacts in the system of “center–regions” relations. The creation of Magadan oblast was not only the part of transformations followed J. V. Stalin’s death. It also manifested a cardinal change of the government system in the North-East of the USSR. Amid the struggle for power in the USSR central leadership, the Dalstroy bosses opposed the creation of the region, but the Khabarovsk leadership’s contacts in the CPSU Central Committee and the RSFSR Council of Ministers helped speed up the positive resolution of the issue and legalize this process. The evidence suggests that political context of the transformations in the North-East reflected the interests of various groups in the central leadership of the country. The author notes that the Dalstroy leadership hoped to retain influence even after the creation of party and soviet government bodies and successfully lobbied for the appointment to the position of the first secretary of the Magadan regional party committee. In the course of work on creating Magadan oblast, the contours of confrontation between the “old” and “new”, Dalstroy and the party-soviet leadership of the region were revealed. This confrontation would be a determining factor of the “transition period” of 1954–1957 in the North-East of the USSR. | ||
